MULTILINGUAL ENVIRONMENT

OUR PEDAGOGICAL BELIEFS

Language learning and international mindedness are at the heart of Redbridge Primary School’s educational project. Our aim is to allow children to benefit, starting from an early age, from foreign language learning, taking full advantage of their innate ability, as infants, to acquire language rules and native pronunciation.

  • Children in the Early Years are immersed in a multilingual environment, with half days being alternatively taught by Portuguese and French teachers, supported by a native English teaching assistant throughout the day.
  • Primary school children benefit from a bilingual approach. English becomes the teaching language for trans-disciplinary inquiry-based learning with language being taught in either French or Portuguese according to the section chosen by the family (following the French or the Portuguese national curriculum accordingly).
STRONG COGNITIVE BENEFITS
  • Exposure to more than one language is an excellent way of flexing and building the muscles of the brain;
  • Foreign language learning has been shown to enhance problem solving skills, critical thinking, creativity, memory, multi-tasking abilities, all leading to improved academic performance;
  • Bilingual children’s knowledge of a second language gives them a lead in learning to read. Their ability to apply the knowledge, insights and experiences of the learning of one language to another language is a major advantage which may be revisited in future language learning.
ENHANCED CULTURAL AWARENESS
  • Multilingual individuals have easier access to a wider range of resources, people and places;
  • Speaking different languages encourages children to be open-minded by being introduced to other cultures, expressions and styles of communication;
  • A knowledge of foreign languages inspires a curiosity about different cultures and an appreciation for humanity;
  • Knowledge of one of more foreign languages provides a competitive edge in the workplace.
